DNA Barcoding for Species Identification of Insect Skins: A Test on Chironomidae (Diptera) Pupal Exuviae

Chironomidae (Diptera) pupal exuviae samples are commonly used for biological monitoring of aquatic habitats. DNA barcoding has proved useful for species identification of chironomid life stages containing cellular tissue, but the barcoding success of chironomid pupal exuviae is unknown. We assessed whether standard DNA barcoding could be efficiently used for species identification of chironomi...

Pupal cases of four Nearctic species of Laphria (Diptera: Asilidae).

The pupal cases of the Nearctic robber flies Laphria canis Williston, 1883: L. ferox Williston, 1883: L. macquarti (Banks, 1917): and L. posticata Say, 1824 are described and illustrated. A key is provided to the pupal cases of these and seven other species of Laphria previously described. A revised key also is included for the pupal cases of three genera of Laphriinae: Andrenosoma, Lampria, an...

Pupal cases of three nearctic species of Machimus (Diptera: Asilidae).

The pupal cases of the Nearctic robber flies, Machimus latapex Martin, 1975, M. occidentalis (Hine, 1909), and M. prairiensis (Tucker, 1907) are described. They are compared with the previously described pupal cases of six other Nearctic species of Machimus. The pupal case of M. latapex and facial sheaths and posterior antennal processes of M. occidentalis are illustrated.

Oukuriella pesae, a new species of sponge-dwelling chironomid (Insecta: Diptera) from Amazonia, Brazil

The larva, pupa, male and female of a new Neotropical chironomid species, Oukuriella pesae, are described and illustrated. The larvae were found in freshwater sponge colonies of Oncosclera navicella (Carter, 1881) in Amazonian streams. The morphological characteristics of the larval head and the presence of fine particles in the larval gut contents suggest that the larvae probably feed on the s...

Two new species and one newly recorded species of Elaphropeza Macquart from Taiwan (Diptera, Empididae, Tachydromiinae)

Previously 11 Elaphropeza species were known from Taiwan. The following two species of the genus Elaphropeza are described: Elaphropeza flaviscutumsp. n. and Elaphropeza trimaculasp. n. One species, Elaphropeza plumata Yang, Merz & Grootaert, is newly recorded from Taiwan. A key to 14 known species of Elaphropeza from Taiwan is presented.
